Five Hand Drill Storage Tips

If you have a high quality hand drill, then it is guaranteed to last long. But if you take good care of it by storing it properly, it might last longer than expected. Here are some things you might want to keep in mind when storing your hand drill.

1. There is no better way to store you hand drill than in the original case that comes with it when you first bought it. Electric hand drills come with a plastic carrying case that has slots for each part. This plastic carrying case is designed to protect your hand drill as well as the bits, chucks and the electric cord.

Keeping this carrying case may help solve your storage problems plus, it will make storing your hand grill easier. So as much as possible, do not take for granted this plastic carrying case.

Another thing is if you have two hand drills and each is made by a different manufacturer, avoid mix and matching their plastic carrying cases. Remember that these plastic carrying cases may have some specifications designed only to fit that particular drill. If you force the wrong drill on a particular case, you might end up damaging it rather than protecting it.

2. Humidity, moisture and water are the three enemies of your hand drill. Remember that the hand drill is not only made from plastic and some parts of it are made from metal. So when storing your drill, even with the carrying case, always make sure that the area is dry and cool. When the three elements are combined, it can result to rust formation which can affect the drill's functioning. So look for an area where there is no water and the air is dry.

3. Wipe your drill dry before storing it. As mentioned, water can result to rusting. It doesn't really take a huge amount of water to cause some corrosion. In fact, tiny droplets, even moisture is enough. So before placing it in the carrying case, wipe it dry first. Also, do not forget to wipe the chuck and the bits.

4. If you unfortunately don't have that carrying case, either because you lost it or it doesn't come with the unit, then you will certainly have to take note of the following in order to properly store your hand drill.

First, wrap the electric cord. Leaving it hanging is really not a good idea because it can cause someone to trip or it can result to the covering getting cracked or ripped. Secure the electric cord using a rubber band or a twist wire. Doing this will keep it out of the way.

Second, place it in a rubber container or a rubber shelf. Placing it in a metal shelf can result to rusting or some form of corrosion between the metals. In addition, placing it in a rubber container or shelf will keep it from slipping, thus keeping it firmly in place.

5. Place it somewhere where children cannot reach it. Remember that kids are naturally curious. If they find your drill, they might be intrigued and end up playing with it. Remember that hand drills are not toys and if the children are left unsupervised with this tool they might end up injuring themselves.
